To the uninformed or uneducated, they will always unfortunately be pigeon holed into being "punk", which is a word that least describes them. Joe's diversity and vision, which came to the fore in Sandinista, clearly shows the depth and uniqueness of this band. For me The Clash is soul music, timeless, meaningful and just damn f*ckin' good!

uuuuhhh yea...dur
but they do also hav a lot of reggae influences and even some early rap and they did expirement with a lot of music styles in sandinista but still over all they r punk rock

i was there, England 1977, and yes it was punk, better than the sex pistols? yes, better than the rest? yes. And even in the later times of musical experimentation with Sandinista and Combat Rock etc, they still carried the punk ideal and anyone who saw them live, even then, would be left in no doubt that they could still be that powerful and raw punk band that blew everything else out of the water in the late seventies.

Not much help there for you is there.
Yes they were a punk band that grew up a bit.
Like all music it grows and the clash grew and took punk roots to a older level.
Why fight if you like there music (punk or not) who gives a s***!!!!!!!!!!

Bumping up

Well they started out as a punk band and stated as much many times in the early interviews. However, there is no denying the metal influence on Give 'Em Enough Rope or rock's influence on London Calling and Combat Rock. However the punk attitude and politics (if not the music itself) did repeatedly insert itself throughout the length of their career. And one thing to keep in mind about this punk or not debate is the complaints of the band members themselves (as well as others who were there at the beginning) is how quickly punk fans wrapped a straight jacket around everything and demanded a strict adherrence to the whole three chord ethic. I for one have always believed punk was about more than only playing three chords rather quickly.
